Vietnam - Over 2,000 people join Run for Peace


Nhan Dan – The 38th annual Run for Peace, organised by Hanoi Moi (New Hanoi) newspaper, took place around Hoan Kiem Lake yesterday morning.
The competition attracted around 2,000 participants, including 700 runners who are students and the armed forces from 29 districts in Hanoi, together with nearly 200 athletes from 19 provinces and cities across the country, 240 foreigners from 16 embassies and international organisations in Hanoi.
The athletes took part in amateur 1,750m and 3,500m races for both men and women, a men’s amateur 5,250m and the advanced professional 5,250m races for women and 8,750m for men.
Hanoi claimed the top position in this year’s tournament, followed by the Border Guard team and Thanh Hoa.
Bui The Anh from the Border Guard team ranked first in the men’s professional individual race and Nguyen Thi Phuong from Thanh Hoa won the women’s professional event. In the men’s professional team event, the Border Guard team finished first, followed by Hanoi and Thanh Hoa, while Thai Binh topped the women’s team event, followed by Hanoi and Thanh Hoa.
In the races for amateur runners, Lamphay from the International Student Centre dominated the individual event for foreigners, while Mel Hamada from the United Nations International School (UNIS) took first place in the women's individual event.
The annual event was one of a number of sports activities to mark the 57th anniversary of the capital’s liberation (October 10), and the 12th anniversary of Hanoi’s UNESCO recognition as a City for Peace.
