Vietnam - Students look at school consultants with suspicious eyes

VietNamNet Bridge – Only a few of schools in Vietnam have school consultants, while students and parents still have doubts about the role of the consultants.

“The parents, who come to see me, always ask me to help their children escape from their problems immediately. Other teachers do not know what I do at school, while students think that only those who have mental problems, need to come to see school consultants,” said Tran Thi Manh Linh, a school consultant of the Nguyen Tat Thanh High School about her job.

Linh has been working as a school consultant for the last two years. She said that she had to spend one year to make parents and students have confidence in her and in the importance of consultancy.

“At first, when I first came to school, people raised a question what I would do at school,” Linh said.

“Parents always want their children to obtain the best achievements at school. A lot of parents want me to help their children immediately settle their problems and always asks if I can do that,” Linh continued.

In general, people keep wrong understanding about the job of consultants. Students think that only those, who have mental illness, have to come to see consultants. Especially, a lot of students come to confide with Linh and do not want to let other students know about this. Meanwhile, teachers have overly high expectations on consultants and always expect to see the problems improved immediately.

According to Nguyen Lam Thuy, a consultant from Vala, a family and child consultancy office, a survey has found that only 15 percent of parents think that they would bring their children to school consultancy centers, because consultancy is necessary for the children, while 85 percent of polled parents are not interested in school consultancy or think that this is not necessary for their children.

“The majority of parents think that their children must be good at learning first, before thinking about other things,” Thuy said, adding that a lot of survey questionnaires were delivered, while only a little over 50 percent have come back to surveyors.

Vala has been cooperating with the Vietnam-Germany High School in providing school consultancy to the school’s students.

Dr Nguyen Tung Lam, Headmaster of the Dinh Tien Hoang High School, said that while in foreign countries, school consultancy is given regularly to students, in Vietnam; parents only bring their children to come to see consultants when the children’s problems get serious.

Since school consultants have to work in suspicion, they have to pay patient and have to apply different methods to get students’ confidence.

“When I meet parents, I regularly ask questions to know more about their circumstances. In the first meeting, I regularly ask what they need to upgrade the current situation,” Linh said.

Linh also regularly carries out surveys to find out the needs and the feelings of students, organize IQ and EQ tests to find the students’ capability. More importantly, according to Linh, it is necessary to set up the clubs where members share experiences in live skills and learning, and encourage students to join the clubs.

“When joining collective activities, students can show their personalities. When I know more about students, I will be able to have deep consultancy and make early intervention when necessary to help them. In some cases, students need to go through treatment measures,” Linh said.

Meanwhile, Lan Anh, a school consultant, who is working for the Dinh Tien Hoang High School, said that in many cases, teachers, families, schools and consultants have to join forces to help students for three years at the school.

“I was told that Dinh Tien Hoang School has many naughty students, but in fact, they are very nice,” Lan Anh said.
