Vietnam - University glut forces many faculties to close

VietNamNet Bridge – The deadline for the last phase of student enrollment for universities and colleges ended last week but many universities have already closed some faculties due to a shortage of students.

Dr Hoang Huu Hoa, head of assessment and the educational quality ensuring board of Hue University said the school's faculties of history, Sinology, computers, philosophy and applied maths would have to close.
Da Lat University faculties of cultural studies, Vietnamese studies and Oriental studies.
Other faculties such as electronics and communication technology, chemistry, biotechnology, sociology and post-harvest technology have admitted only a few applicants because of declining enrolments.
Dong Thap University has also announced closure of four faculties including industrial technical education, agricultural technical education, library science and education equipment, and technology.
Da Nang University and Pham Van Dong University in the Mekong Delta in Quang Ngai Province plan to close several faculties after the first enrolment phase ends.
Nha Trang University also plans to close the door to the faculties of seafood-exploiting techniques and economy-seafood management after the second phase of enrollment.
An Giang University has the largest number of faculties shutting shop. Seven of them had no applicants.
Dr Hoang Xuan Quang, vice rector of An Giang University, said that his university's education faculties had few students.
Quang said the situation was alarming, and suggested that the Government create policies to develop these faculties.
Universities in some other provinces face similar problems. These include Vinh City Technical Education University and Van Xuan University of Technology in Nghe An Province, Hung Vuong University in northern Phu Tho Province, Phu Yen University in central Phu Yen Province and Hong Duc University in northern Thanh Hoa.
At a recent workshop, Professor Dao Trong Thi, chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for Culture, Education, Youth and Children, said the decline in enrolments had been caused by the opening of too many universities and colleges.
