THE
Brunei Halal Brand has set up a base in Birmingham, United Kingdom to push
sales and distribution in the country and in Europe.
The Bruneian company has become the latest
tenant of Saltley Business Park in Birmingham, where it signed a five-year
lease contract for a 25,000-sq ft unit.
GBR Phoenix Beard, a UK-based property
consultancy which aided Brunei Halal in the search for the property, said in a
statement earlier this week that the new office would create 30 new jobs for
the region.
Christian Smith, director in charge of GBR
Phoenix Beards industrial agency team, said that Brunei Halal needed a location
that provided excellent access to the UK's transport network and allowed for
further expansion.
"Saltley offers these attributes being
situated around one mile from Junction 6 of the M6 (Spaghetti Junction) and
within easy access of the M5. Brunei Halal were also attracted to Saltley
Business Park due to the site improvements currently underway, giving a new
lease of life to what is already a highly attractive business location,"
said GBR's statement quoted Smith as saying.
Saltley Business Park is owned by Hansteen UK
Industrial Property Unit Trust and managed by Hansteen Holdings PLC.
The business park was acquired in December
2010 from receivers acting for Lloyds Banking Group.
Dr Mohammad Nazir OBE, chief executive of
Brunei Halal's UK office, said that Brunei Halal had looked at a number of
options for the sales and distribution base in the region, and that Saltley
Business Park provided an excellent match to their search criteria.
Dr Mohammad, who was appointed as CEO of
Wafirah Holdings Sdn Bhd's subsidiary in August 2011, was brought on to handle
Brunei Wafirah UK Ltd.
"Brunei Halal's dry food product range is
vast covering biscuits, snacks and crisps, confectionary and noodles. The
appeal of certified Halal products has increased significantly over recent
years and we see significant potential to grow our brand across Europe,"
he said.
He had earlier said that he was "delighted
to be part of an organisation that has in its core the objective of bringing
complete halal assurance to the Muslim consumer in UK and Europe, where the
market is currently fragmented".
Wafirah Holdings Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Noel
Shield said that Dr Mohammad, who was chosen among many candidates for the UK
CEO position, shared the company's passion for issues surrounding the halal
industry, particularly in the UK. "With that in mind, Dr (Mohammad) Nazir
is the right CEO to lead the strategies in place," Shield said.
The business park is due to complete in early
2012, and includes upgrades such as site wide lighting and the installation of
a new intelligent CCTV network and an Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
system, GBR said.
In their first six months of ownership,
Hansteen put in place a team of security personnel consisting of former Gurkha
soldiers to provide improved operations, quality personnel, more effective
secure systems and better policed teams 24/7.
Current long standing tenants of Saltley
Business Park include: Anixter; iForce; IMS UK; Ajax Tocco International Ltd
and Rippleglen Ltd, representing a diverse range of industry sectors from
logistics and distribution to industrial engineering and retail.
