In view of the outbreak of bird flu (H5N1) in Hong Kong,
the Department of Agriculture and Agrifoods, Ministry of Industry and Primary
Resources in Brunei have announced that they were taking measures to address
any eventuality.
Following the advice by the
World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the government departments have
started monitoring border control posts, as well as implementing a regulatory
programme involving local poultry farms to look for the "highly pathogenic
avian influenza" (HPAI).
The programme includes taking
blood samples and swabs from birds at farms, private homes, and pet-shops. The
departments have also prohibited importation of animals and poultry-related
products such as chicken and eggs from countries that have been affected and
considered high-risk.
The department said that all
the blood samples and swaps tested so far have not found any signs of the
virus. It was also stated that at the moment, Brunei does not import chicken,
eggs or poultry products from the countries affected, including China and Hong
Kong.
The departments have stated
that they will continue to monitor the situation in Hong Kong and the region
through cooperation with international organisations such as the OIE, the World
Health Organisation, Embassies in Brunei Darussalam and concerned agencies in
neighbouring countries.
