Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) secretary
general Surin Pitsuwan expressed confidence Thursday in Cambodia's chairmanship
of the regional body in the coming year, including its hosting of an Asean
summit in April.
"All Asean members and
partners have full confidence that Cambodia is going to chair Asean with great
success," he told reporters after meeting with Foreign Minister Hor Nam
Hong and Commerce Minister Cham Prasith.
He added that all members and
partners pledged their support and cooperation to help Cambodia.
Hor Nam Hong said the meeting
with Surin was "to make sure that Cambodia will chair Asean successfully
in 2012."
In addition to the April
summit, Cambodia is also scheduled to host an East Asian summit in November.
Kao Kim Huon, secretary of
state of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Coooperation,
reiterated that Cambodia was ready to host the summit meetings, noting that the
country now had more human resources and facilities.
Surin arrived in Phnom Penh
Wednesday for a three-day visit and is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister
Hun Sen and have a royal audience with King Norodom Sihamoni.
Cambodia last hosted an Asean
summit in 2002.
