The border situation between Laos and Vietnam remains
stable, which facilitates socio-economic development and poverty reduction in
the two countries.
The two countries' border
committees agreed that a stable border helped to strengthen the traditional
friendship, solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.
The statement was made at the
21st meeting between the two border delegations held in Hanoi, Vietnam, on
December 24-25. The Lao delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister and
Head of the Laos-Vietnam Border Committee Bounkeut Sangsomsak, and the
Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister and Head of the
Vietnam National Border Committee Ho Xuan Son.
The two sides agreed that they
have coordinated well in the implementation of their joint agreement on
national border regulations and other relevant agreements, and accepted the
minutes of the previous meeting.
They underlined the need for
closer coordination between the two countries' ministries, branches and
localities in border management to maintain stability and order along their
shared border.
The two border committees
appreciated the progress made in the demarcation of their shared border since
the project began in 2009.
So far, the two sides have
jointly defined 631 sites to plant markers and have planted 497 out of about
800 markers. The rest will be planted in 2012, and the whole project is
expected to be complete in 2014, including the formulation of legal documents
related to the border.
Laos and Vietnam have a shared
border of more than 2,000km running north to south. The two countries decided
to install additional border markers along their common border to more cl early
define the boundary.
The project aims to contribute
towards building a shared border of peace, friendship and sustainable
development and will also enhance the special relationship, solidarity and
comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.
Laos and Vietnam have
experienced more trade, tourism and cultural exchanges, and the two countries
have also opened more border markets to facilitate trade.
The two sides agreed to jointly
prepare activities to mark the 35th anniversary of the signing of the
Laos-Vietnam national border demarcation agreement in July next year.
