VietNamNet Bridge – Educators and employers have been urged to join forces to build a career guidance program, or the deviation in the supply and demand in the labor market will never be settled.
About one million students attend the university and junior college entrance exams every year, while it is estimated that 35 percent of examinees pass the exams to study at the schools. However, the problem is that most students register to follow “hot” study branches, especially economics ones, while other training branches cannot find enough learners.
Experts have blamed the imbalance in student enrolment to the bad career guidance and the bad labor force forecasting.
10 hottest study branches
Dr Le Thi Thanh Mai, Head of the Students’ Affairs Division of the HCM City National University, said that of the 280 training branches, only 10 branches can easily attract students, namely business administration (340 schools, 8.3 percent of total students), accountancy (297 schools, 8 percent), information technology (295 schools, 6.5 percent), finance and banking (200 schools and 5.8 percent), electronic and electric technology (156 schools, 3.7 percent), English philology (143 schools -3.1 percent)
Problems exist
As more and more students register to study “hot” study branches, more and more schools have been set up to satisfy the demand, while operational schools have been trying to open new faculties to attract more students to the study branches.
According to Dr Pham Ngoc Tram from the HCM City University for Social Sciences and Humanity, many schools have also enrolled students to the branches which are not their advantages. As a result, they just “teach the things they have, while they do not teach the things the society need”. This also explains why a high percentage of graduates cannot find jobs after the graduation.
A recent survey showed that in the eastern region of the South, the demand for employees accounts for just 17 percent of the total graduates, which has led to the big waste of bachelors, especially in the service sector.
Mistakes in choosing careers
While students rush to register to follow “hot study branches”, they ignore many other majors which are really very necessary for the society.
Dr Nguyen Thien Tong, Deputy President of the Cuu Long University, said that heavy industries, which play very important roles in the national economy, always face the labor shortage. It is because schools cannot enroll enough students for the majors. In minds of students, economics and trade relating study branches should the top choice, and they only accept to follow other study branches if they have no other choice.
A scientific research at the state level has pointed out that 70 percent of high school graduates cannot get necessary career guidance, 60 percent of teachers do not highly appreciate the career guidance or they lack the capability to organize career guidance activities, and 89 percent of polled teachers have admitted that schools have not paid appropriate attention to the career guidance.
In recent years, some universities usually organize career guidance activities for high school students. However, in fact, the purpose of the universities is not giving advices on careers, but doing marketing for them. As a result, the introductions of the schools make students confused, which may lead to wrong decisions.
Therefore, experts believe that it is necessary for educators and employers to join forces to build up a common career guidance program to ensure the most possible effective career guidance.
