The
Vietnam National University – Hanoi (VNUH) is planning to use ETS-based tests
to enroll students for undergraduate and graduate programs, Dr Nguyen Van Nha,
head of the bloc’s education department, says.
The bloc, consisting of many member
universities, will utilize tests similar to the U.S.’s SAT, GRE, and GMAT exams
– which are created and administered by ETS, an American testing company – for
enrollment from the 2013-2014 school year onwards, Dr Nha says.
The VNUH tests will be prepared in a way that
can precisely assess candidates’ aptitude, which the U.S. tests have been very
successful at.
Dr Nha adds that the proposed tests will be
able to judge student’s general knowledge and logical thinking, and thus can
help admit them to programs which are commensurate with their capability.
VNUH earlier piloted the tests during an
admission exam for a few graduate courses this year.
A survey revealed that 80 percent of the test
takers said they felt happy with the tests, according to VNUH.
The university group is mulling over this new
assessment method before submitting it to the Ministry of Education and
Training for approval.
This is an attempt by the group to gain more
autonomy, as the ministry controls enrollment of all junior colleges and
universities in the country.
Vietnam currently uses standardized tests
created by the ministry to choose the best students for higher education.
The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a
standardized test for college admissions in the U.S., while the GRE (Graduate
Record Examination) and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) are
admissions requirements for many graduate schools there.
ETS, or Educational Testing Service, is the
world's largest private nonprofit educational testing and assessment
organization, and is headquartered in the U.S. state of New Jersey.
