The Daegu Police Station has arrested eight foreigners,
including 26-year-old Vietnamese illegal immigrant Ms. D, on charges of
receiving medical treatment by sharing national health insurance identification
numbers.
Ms. D and three others are
suspected of borrowing the identification numbers from four legal immigrants,
including 26-year-old Ms. S, beginning in 2008 to receive treatment at various
locations including a maternity clinic in the Chimsan-dong neighborhood of
Daegu.
The police investigation
determined that Ms. D and the others were working together when they used the
names of Ms. S and the others with proper health insurance to make over ten
million won by not paying medical bills, which had to be paid by the
government.
The government says that in
2007 there were 513 similar cases costing over 370 million won, which increased
to 1,027 cases costing over 896 million won last year.
