Vietnam - Immigrants fear Tet

VietNamNet Bridge – As for immigrant workers, who come from other provinces and cities, Tet is a big concern. 2011 was very difficult year for all. Therefore, they have flocking to big cities, where they can take more extra jobs to get money for Tet celebration.

More jobs will bring more money

In an 8 square meter room in Phu Dien town of Tu Liem district, the couple Nguyen Thi Thu and Nguyen Van Kien were having lunch and discussing what to buy to celebrate Tet. Thu is now a worker of the Thuy Khe Leather Shoes Company, while her husband is a security guard. Both of them have the total income of 3 million dong a month.

“We spend as much as we can earn. We have to leave the child at grandparents in Bac Giang province,” Thu said. “I got frightened when thinking about Tet. There are too many things I have to buy. I have to buy gifts for the parents and relatives, and buy clothes for the child, then buy food for Tet parties.”

Kien told his wife that he would take on more spells of duty and he would take extra jobs as porters and officer cleaners to earn more money for Tet celebration.

Do Van Viet and his wife have left the home village for Hanoi to work for the last 10 years. Viet works as a taxi motorbike driver, while his wife as scrap iron dealer. Viet and his wife did not return to the home village in Nam Dinh province to enjoy the New Year 2012 holiday, because they needed to work to earn money to pay debts.

“Last year we borrowed a big sum of money to build a house for the parents and the children. Now we can feel secure in the stormy season. However, we need to work to pay debts,” Viet said.

“We have to work on daytime and at night these days. In the evening, I work as porter. Meanwhile, my wife does the house cleaning from which she can earn 20,000 dong per hour,” he said.

Tran Van Chung from Hung Yen province is a pride of his family when he can get a stable job in the city from which Chung can earn 4 million dong a month. He has promised to give the parents five million dong to celebrate Tet.

“Therefore, I have to cut down expenses, though everything is getting more and more expensive in the city. Besides, I hope I will get Tet bonus in some more days,” he said.

It is now the right time for farmers to leave the countryside for big cities to look for jobs. The Kim Nguu labor market has become very crowded these days due to the sharp increase in the number of workers.

Hoang Cong Sach from Nghe An province and two friends from the same home village have joined the labor market gathered on Nguyen Van Huyen Street. Sach said that many people in the same village have also left for Hanoi or HCM City to earn money. If he can find enough jobs, he can earn 2-3 million dong a month.

Buying goods in sale-off campaigns

Thoi, the wife of Viet, said that she has got some beautiful shirts for the children. The shirts were given to her by some rich housewives when she collected old goods from their homes. “The shirts are still clean and very beautiful. A new shirt would cost hundreds of thousands of dong,” she said.

She also said that it would be better to buy products at the shops which try to liquidate to leave for new retail premises, or at the shops which offer products at price discounts.

“Especially, the clothes displayed on the pavements are very cheap,” she said. “I never enter beautiful shops with lights inside,” she added.
