Singapore - CDC launches illustrated guide to bust social assistance myths

Some 20 per cent, or about 500 low-income residents living in the South West district do not know where to apply for financial and other types of social assistance.

Many of these tend to be elderly residents.

These are the findings of a survey conducted last year by the South West Community Development Council (CDC) on 2,569 households staying in rental blocks.

Although the CDC has raised awareness about its social assistance schemes through the ComCare hotlline, newsletter and other means, some residents say they do not know where to go for help, or think it is difficult to get assistance from the CDC.

To address this, the CDC will be launching its first illustrated social assistance guide on February 8.

Besides raising awareness of where and how to get help, the guide will also debunk common myths related to CDC social assistance.

The "myth buster" guide is a result of feedback provided by residents and community partners. The CDC will work closely with community and corporate stakeholders to distribute the illustrated guide, available in all four languages, and other awareness materials this year.

Over the years, the number of residents who have applied for social assistance has increased by as much as 25 per cent in the last quarter of 2011, compared to the quarter before.
