Thailand - VN looks to bolster Thailand relations

Part of Vietnam's regional policy is to consistently attach high importance to the good neighbourliness relationship with Thailand, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh said in the meeting with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Yingluck expressed her pleasure at the development of the friendship and comprehensive co-operation between the two countries.

She highly appreciated the warm welcome the Vietnamese Government and people had given to her last November and agreed that the two sides would continue discussing measures to boost bilateral co-operation on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

Minh conveyed Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's best regards to his Thai counterpart and thanked the Thai Government for creating favourable conditions for the overseas Vietnamese community living and working in the country.

In the dialogue with Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, the two sides agreed to speed up the implementation of agreements reached between the two countries' high-ranking leaders such as increasing visits and exchanges; continuing to developing existing co-operation mechanisms; and promoting the second joint cabinet meeting this year.

With regard to national defence and security, the two countries would continue enhancing common marine patrols, prevent trans-national crimes and international terrorists, and maintain commitments to not allow any organisations and individuals to use one country's territory in activities causing harm to the other country's security.

In terms of trade and investment, the two ministers agreed that the bilateral trade value should be over US$7 billion this year, facilitating the two countries to take advantages of the East-West Corridor.

On this occasion, Minh proposed Thailand consider releasing Vietnamese fishermen recently caught by Thai authorities.

He also suggested the two countries sign an agreement on forming proper settlement mechanisms for issues related to the infringement of the two countries' sea borders, based on their laws and good relations.

In terms of the East Sea, the two sides agreed that it was necessary to maintain peace, stability, security and aviation freedom in the East Sea, settle disputes using peaceful methods, obey international laws, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982 and Declaration of Conduct (DOC) in the East Sea and progress to building a Code of Conduct (COC).

The two sides also agreed that they would foster close co-operation in a joint effort with other ASEAN countries to build a strong and cohesive ASEAN community toward 2015.

They voiced their support to keep their co-ordination to improve the effectiveness of co-operation mechanisms in the Sub-Mekong Region and agreed that it was a need for all countries in the Sub-Mekong Region to sustainably use the water sourced from the Mekong River.
