Vietnam - For the first time at a Vietnamese university: the classroom of love

VietNamNet Bridge – Students can listen to music, date or even sleep at the self-taught modern classrooms at the Thang Long University. The learning model is unique in Vietnam.

The self-taught classrooms at the Thang Long University have different cute names such as My Love, My Way, My Life. When someone enters the room, he would see flowers everywhere and heart-shape pillows. And if he goes to the fish lakes, he would see a garden with melodious music.

Thang Long University, a people founded school, has made investment to set up a building for autodidactics, called “Think Different”. The “classroom of love” area has five rooms, located from the third to the seventh floors of the major learning building.

“Tu lap” (independent), “Tu tin” (self-confident), “Tinh yeu” (love) and “Thanh cong” (successful) are the very lovely names that the students have given to the classes. The “My love” class was opened on the Valentine Day February 14.

The classes of love have been installed with all necessary modern equipment, including computers, overhead projects and wifi. Especially, the interior decoration and the equipment all have bright colors and attractive patterns, such as roses, eaten apple or heart.

“This is really a unique school model which only exists at the Thang Long University. I am really proud of the school and I feel I have strong attachment to the school, teachers and friends more than ever,” said Tran Manh Tuan, a student of the Finance and Banking Faculty.

Le Thuy Linh, a student of the English faculty, said that most of the students feel excited with the new learning model. “The atmosphere here can encourage students to study. We can discuss with each other on different topics,” she said.

However, Linh admitted that it is not quiet in the classrooms, and that students in the classrooms may forget the “self-discipline.” The new learning model, where students can enjoy freedom, proves to be suitable only to the study in teams. Those, who want quietness to concentrate, would say “no” to the classrooms.

The classrooms look very quiet. However, when entering the rooms, one would hear a lot of sounds from the chatting friends, mobile phones and music. Especially, many students choose the classrooms as the places for dating. This seems to be an ideal place for dating, because the couples do not bear any supervision either from parents or lecturers.

“Where are you? I am in My Love. Come here to gossip,” this was the content of a call conversation that reached to the ears of reporters.

The existence of the classrooms of love has become the hot topic among students and on education forums. Some people applaud the new model, saying that it is now the right time for universities to remove the traditional way of learning and apply modern methods. They said that the new model can give more freedom and autonomy, thus helping develop the creativeness of students.

Meanwhile, educators have doubts about the efficiency of the new model. Since students are not supervised at the classrooms, they can do anything they want. As a result, many students spent time on chatting and playing instead of learning.

The postures which are the "taboo" for students of other schools can be made in the classrooms. Students can hang up their legs on the tables, lie down on the chairs or take a nap right in the class. Vietnamese educators, who have been following the traditional way for the last tens of years, said that though they advocate the renovation in education, students still need to obey certain discipline.

It is clear that the new learning model is unique, while the classrooms are very cute. However, it is still early to say about the efficiency of the model.
