Public
security academies and universities have capped the number of new female
enrolees at 10 percent for the upcoming school year, which starts in September,
the Ministry of Public Security says.
As a result, admission requirements may be
higher for female candidates compared to their male counterparts, according to
Colonel Mai Duc Hai, a high-ranking official in charge of education at the
ministry.
Hai explained to Tuoi Tre newspaper that the
imposition of the cap stems from the fact that there are too many women working
in the public security sector at the moment.
He adds that appointing women to appropriate
positions is now a headache for the leaders of many departments.
On average, females accounted for 15 percent
of new enrolees at public security schools in preceding years.
To be eligible for entrance exams at those
higher education institutions, high school graduates have to go through a
pre-selection process at police departments in their hometown.
Pre-selection requirements range from height,
and weight, to age and conduct records.
Applications to the schools must be submitted
to public security bodies at local levels, instead of the Ministry of Education
and Training as in normal schools.
