Vietnam - A land of Cham people’s products

Situated 350 kilometers from HCMC and 100 kilometers from Nha Trang City, the central province of Ninh Thuan is the best place to go to admire and pick up some of the Cham people’s products.

There are more than 100,000 Cham people scattered around the country, but Ninh Thuan is their home with around 50,000 based there. Around 40,000 are based in Ninh Phuoc District which is considered an ideal venue for tourists to explore Cham culture and tourist products.

The highlights of the province are Bau Truc Pottery Village and My Nghiep brocade weaving village.

To reach the pottery village and discover how the locals make the craft products, visitors can take a motorbike trip or follow a bus as the village is located about 10 kilometers south of the center of Phan Rang City. Apart from traditional products like vases or pots, tourists will have a chance to see a full range of goods from small statues, replicas of Poglong Giarai and Cham towers, linga and yoni objects, ornaments as well as animals.

The pottery goods are made from clay from the Quao River which will be mixed with sand. The clay is molded and shaped by traditional methods. To color the pottery, you will use extracted water from thi fruits and the product will be baked by rice straw or firewood, not in a kiln.

In the village, guests will be instructed to make ceramics by themselves, order products on demand and take in local landscapes.

Traveling a further two kilometers, you will reach My Nghiep brocade weaving village. Bau Truc village was formed in the 12th century and My Nghiep was discovered five centuries later by a Cham woman.

It has been a hotspot for tourists since 1991 and it is interesting for tourists to witness many Cham ladies in traditional costumes absorbed weaving in looms with their colorful brocades.

Tourists should visit Irasara shop which displays many books in Cham languages, ceramic and brocade products, musical instruments and daily tools of Cham people. There are about 420 households making brocade in the province and they make about 2,000 to 6,000 meters of brocade a year. In My Nghiep, there are dozens of experienced artisans who were handed down the craft from their ancestors.
