CHINA'S top political advisor Jia Qinglin will be in Brunei from April 18 to 20 for his first official visit at the invitation of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The visit of Jia, the chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), to the country will be the first of its kind conducted by CPPCC's chairman since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei.

This was informed during a press briefing held by His Excellency Zheng Xianglin, ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Brunei, at the ambassador's residence at Jalan Elia Fatima, Kiarong.

The ambassador said the visit aims to push forward the development of the good-neighbourly relationship and friendly cooperation between the two countries, making the visit a great importance to the bilateral relationship.

During his official visit, Jia, who is China's fourth-ranked politician, will meet with His Majesty and attend His Majesty's welcoming banquet.

His Majesty and Jia are also expected to exchange views on bilateral relations and other regional and international issues of mutual concern.

According to the press release by China's Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, Jia's itinerary will also include a meeting with Legislative Council (LegCo) speaker Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Hj Isa Pehin Datu Perdana Manteri Dato Laila Utama Hj Ibrahim; a welcoming luncheon host by the Brunei-China Friendship Association; a meeting with representatives from relevant social organisations of Brunei; and visits to local landmarks Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah and the Royal Regalia.

Jia's visit will add a new episode to the continuity of the traditional friendship between the two countries, the ambassador said.

He also noted Brunei and China longstanding traditional friendship, where 2011 marked the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the two countries diplomatic ties.

The year 2011 also saw the bilateral trade volumes reached a historic high, amounting to USD$1.311 billion.

The ambassador further mentioned how concrete cooperation between two countries had developed in various fields with a number of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed to enhance cooperation, with more deals on new areas to be signed in the future.
