Brunei - Teachers attend ICT workshop

A TOTAL of 59 teachers received their certificates yesterday after participating in the Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) workshop. The ceremony took place at the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

On hand to present the certificates was Dr Hjh Jainatul Halida Jaidin, Deputy Dean (Administration) at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE), UBD.

During the workshop, teachers were trained on how to use practical tools for design and evaluation of learning activities and students' work towards achieving the goals of the 21st Century National Education System (SPN21).

The workshop was also held to prepare the teachers for the Learning Educators Project, Advanced Pedagogy for the 21st Century (LEAP 21), an initiative of the Ministry of Education and SHBIE.

Following the workshop, the SHBIE research team will be collecting data on the teachers' use of LEAP 21. The data will form part of an international database from which a professional development can be created.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, Aisyah Arwa As-syifa Abdullah, a Social Studies teacher from Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri (STPRI), said the course taught her how to integrate ICT into the learning environment and how it can help achieve the objectives of learning.

She also said that it gave her a better understanding of ICT, and that it is more than just "using computer laptops and projectors in the classroom".

When asked on how she would use ICT while teaching, she said that instead of asking students to only present with the aid of laptops and projectors, they could also apply what they have studied "outside of the classroom" through the use of social networking sites.

"With this method of learning and sharing, we are, in a way, asking students to reach out to outside the community and share what they have learnt," she said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Khairul Azmi Sawal, a teacher from Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) College, said that he feels the course has provided a positive impact on his teaching skills. One of the dimensions he has learnt was ICT integration, and how the use of ICT is important in teaching and learning.
