Vietnam - ASEAN welcomes Vietnamese Deputy Minister as next Secretary General

VietNamNet Bridge – The present Secretary General of ASEAN, Mr. Surin Pitsuwan, said that ASEAN welcomes the designation of the Vietnamese Deputy Minister as the next Secretary General.

“ASEAN welcomes the designation of the Vice Minister of Vietnam as the next Secretary General and I feel relieved already,” Mr. Surin Pitsuwan told correspondents on the sideline of the ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, this morning.

It is said that Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Luong Minh will be appointed as the next ASEAN Secretary General later this year.

Mr. Minh will replace the current Secretary General, Mr. Surin Pitsuwan – former Foreign Minister of Thailand, when his term ends at the end of 2012.

Mr. Minh, 60, has been Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Minister since December 2008.

He has been Vietnam’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) since January 2004.

Earlier, he was the assistant to the Foreign Minister, chief of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Multilateral Economic Cooperation Department, a lecturer at the Institute for International Relations of Vietnam, the Second and then the First Secretary of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN and international organization in Geneva and the Vietnamese Ambassador, Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN in Geneva.

It is expected that ASEAN leaders will approve the designation at the ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh in November. Mr. Minh will take office in January 2013.
