Many Ho Chi Minh City parents are leaving no
stone unturned to get their children enrolled in an elementary school of their
choice ahead of the new school year starting September.
One
trick they frequently employ is finding ways to register their kids’ residence
in the district in which the school they have targeted is located, as city
schools usually admit students on the basis of their registered residence.
In one
striking case, a parent even sent a construction team from his company to a
school in District 3, offering to re-pave the entire school yard, right after
submitting his child’s application to it.
Others
often give gifts or make donations to the schools first to build connections,
and then send their applications later.
Tu, a
father living in Binh Thanh District, says he will ask a contact close to a
school in District 1, where he wants to send his kid, to give money to it in
the form of voluntary contributions so his child’s application will be quickly
accepted.
Many
other schools in District 3 also enroll students from other districts in this
way, the parent reveals.
Q., a
mother in Thu Duc District, says she is willing to make deals behind closed
doors to find her child a seat at Chu Van An Elementary School in Binh Thanh
District as it has a very nice campus and a small class size, a perfect
learning environment in her opinion.
“Many
parents from other districts are racing to send their children to this school
so we have to try hard not to be left behind,” she tells the Tuoi Tre
correspondent.
“And
now we are making use of our connections to get our kid into it.”
In big
cities like HCMC or Hanoi, schools give the highest priority to enrollees whose
registered residence is from the same area where their main campus is situated,
while candidates from other districts must have their applications closely
screened before any possible admission.
