Ho Chi Minh City short-term course runners
which offer ‘Semester in the Army’ programs that equip school-age students with
life skills in an army-like environment are getting ready for the upcoming June
summer break.
They
have stepped up their marketing for the programs for nearly a month in the hope
of appealing the most possible school students to their classes.
Some
have sent staff to distribute flyers for their courses at major supermarkets or
hung ad banners on many city streets to catch people’s attention, while others
choose to directly approach their potential clients at their schools.
“An
organization which is running a ‘Semester in the Army’ course this summer
recently came to introduce it to my school,” said Van Anh, a middle school
student at an international school based in the city.
The
operators have paid very close attention to recruiting course trainers,
coordinators, and volunteers who play the most important role in any ‘Semester
in the Army’ modules.
Thanh Nien
Culture House, one of the course runners, has asked many teachers and
psychologists who are experienced in teaching skills to youngsters to join
their training team.
It has
started seeking qualified coordinators and volunteers, who act as assistants to
the main trainers of the courses it will introduce this summer.
Truong
Son Group of Volunteer Youth, another course provider, has made necessary
preparations regarding the number of trainers and coordinators so that its
‘Semester in the Army’ programs will be successfully run during the upcoming
summer break.
“We
always try our best to build a strong team to run our courses,” says Le Thi
Ngoc Uyen, head of the group.
Some
course runners have said they plan to train their course-takers at famous
former war sites like Con Dao offshore the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung
Tau, where the French colonialists imprisoned and tortured Vietnamese
revolutionaries during their invasion of Vietnam or the Truong Son Range in the
central region, which served as a strategic supply route of the Vietnamese
during their resistance war against the Americans.
One of
them says they will even let their enrollees role-play wartime commandoes, a
Vietnamese élite task force during the resistance war, at the Sac Forest in Can
Gio District.
“Our
most important mission is to equip the Vietnamese youth with essential life
skills,” Thanh Nien Culture House vice director Nguyen Quang Cuong says.
What is
a ‘Semester in the Army’ course?
Lasting up to 10 days, a ‘Semester in the
Army’ course provides enrollees with life skills, teamwork spirit,
self-exploring methods, and other good habits in a military-like training
environment.
It was
first introduced in Vietnam four years ago.
