Laos - EU pledges further assistance for Laos

(KPL) The EU support roughly constitutes one third of all grant aid provided to Laos, calculating for almost 40% or about EUR 100 million in annual disbursement, according to a press conference on celebration of 62nd anniversary of EU in Vientiane, last Thursday.

The main sectors of EU cooperation are agriculture, forestry, trade and business facilitation, and improved health service and better education, said Mr. David Lipman Ambassador of EU Delegation to Laos.

He said in the past, EU supported for Lao accession to a full member of the World Trade Organisation and the recent launch of a voluntary partnership agreement in the forestry sector are just few examples of future bilateral cooperation.

Mr. Lipman added that we want to intensify our cooperation in global climate change diplomacy, judicial and migration, and human rights issue. We are working together to build even closer ties both bilaterally and regionally through ASEAN and ASEM.

EU and Laos have also evolved with the years, from a more donor-recipient country at the beginning, to a more mature political partnership.

EU through European Commission alone disburses on overage EUR 15 million for development cooperation in Laos.

Our existing areas of cooperation are education and health sector policies, rural development in the northern uplands and food security, good governance and public finance management, and trade and small business development as well as emergency assistance, Mr Lipman said.
