(KPL) The government of Australia has committed
to continue to support the Lao government efforts to combat and build the
capacity to address human trafficking in a long term.
The
commitment was made last Friday at the handover ceremony of useful office
equipments in Vientiane Capital.
The aid
package worth more than AUD12,000, funded by the government of Australia
through the Australian Federal Police handed over to the Anti-Human Trafficking
Department of the Lao Ministry of Public Security.
The
equipments will assist the newly office establishment of and develop the
internal organisation.
The
equipments including photocopy machine, printer, desktop computers, laptop,
camera, video recorder, voice recorder, LCD projector and external hard disc
were presented by Australian ambassador to Laos, Mrs Linda Worthaisong to
Secretariat Head of the National Committee for Anti-Human Trafficking of the
Ministry of Public Security, Col. Kiengkham Inphengthavong.
Speaking
at the handover ceremony, Mrs Worthaisong has expressed congratulation to the
ministry for successful establishment of such significant department.
"As
we are all aware that the anti-human trafficking is crime that strikes at the
very core of our communities, often targeting the most vulnerable in our
society within a country or across border," she said.
The
Australian government has been working with Laos for a number of years to
strengthen the response to anti-human trafficking through its regional
programmes the Asia Regional Cooperation to Prevent People Trafficking
(2003-2006) and a follow on project the Asia Regional Trafficking in Persons
Project (2006-2010).
These
projects supported front line law enforcement efforts and have helped to
strengthen specialist and general law enforcement responses to trafficking,
judicial and prosecutorial responses to trafficking and improve policy, legal,
research and outreach capacity of relevant agencies.
The
relationship and cooperation between the Australian and Lao police have been
developed in a good way.
This is
a step towards working more closely with the Lao Anti-Human Trafficking
Department to combat this crime type.
Enhancing
police to police cooperation throughout ASEAN is an important part of improving
our collective ability to combat trafficking in persons, Mrs Worthaisong added.
Col.
Kiengkham who is also Deputy Director General of the General Police Department
expressed thanks to the government of Australia for this assistance. These
grant aid will be a significant part to enhance the existing friendship and
cooperation on anti-human trafficking and also contribute to the orderliness in
the society, said Col. Kiengkham.
