Philippines - Phil-BAC, PCCI ink pact to operationalize trade center

MANILA, May 27 - The Philippine Section of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (Phil-BAC) has forged partnership with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) to jointly undertake initiatives to promote business opportunities in the ASEAN region, with a particular focus on small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Through the ASEAN Trade and Investment Center (ATIC), Phil-BAC and PCCI are offering new alternatives for Filipino entrepreneurs to explore and expand their markets in ASEAN.

The ATIC, which is housed at the PCCI office, will assist and facilitate inquiries and concerns related to doing business in other ASEAN countries.

The ATIC will initially be a platform to help engage SMEs in the ASEAN market, but eventually will be used to promote and facilitate SMEs engagement with the broader ASEAN + markets such as Japan, China, Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union.

Jay Yuvallos, Phil-ABAC member, said, “The ATIC will not only provide access to companies wishing to undertake export and import activities and investments within the region, it will also be implementing awareness-raising campaign on the opportunities and benefits of an integrated single market,” referring to the creation of an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) expected to be in place by 2015.

He said the ATIC will be linked up with government agencies engaged in SMEs development, export and trade promotion and other private organizations such as the Department of Trade and Industry and its attached bureaus, and the Philippine Exporters Confederation (Philexport), respectively.

PCCI president Miguel Varela stressed, “We need to diversify our markets and increase our engagement with ASEAN. ASEAN has a market of over a 500 million peoples. There are opportunities for our SMEs and the ATIC will help them maximize these opportunities.”

Phil-BAC and PCCI, in consultation with DTI and other private entities, have started drawing up plans to promote the regionalization of SMEs, in preparation for the 2015 AEC.

Part of its activity is a series of roadshows on FTAs through PCCI’s Area Business Conferences (ABCs) and the Philippine Business Conference in October.
