VIENNA,
Austria – Concerned Filipinos in Austria
will hold a peaceful rally Friday in front of the United Nations building in
Vienna.
The
planned event is in connection with the protest-rally conducted on May 11 in
front of the Chinese Embassy in Vienna against the increasing incursions of
China in Philippine territory particularly in the Spratly Islands, Recto Reed
and Panatag (Scarborough) shoal which violate international law.
“It is
within this framework that we are bringing to the attention of the United
Nations, particularly the ASEAN countries, namely: Singapore, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei and Cambodia to be with us in
resolving the above mentioned issue,” Volet Gerstl, leader of the Concerned
Filipinos in Austria, told ABS-CBN News.
“There
is a need to enjoin the leaders of our
country and other signatories to move forward by establishing mechanisms to
implement the intent of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the
South China Sea,” Manny Sarmiento of the Pinas First Movement in Austria said.
It
should be noted that China and other ASEAN countries signed this Declaration on
the conduct of parties in the South China Sea on November 4, 2002 in Phnom
Penh, Cambodia.
Since
then, ASEAN and China have been working on moving from a declaration to a
firmer legal basis - a Regional Code of Conduct.
The
recent confrontation between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea
means that achieving that code has become even more critical.
The
organizers called on Filipinos in Austria and supporters to join the event for
the peaceful resolution of the case.
“Respect
UN Convention on the Law of the Sea! UN should impose the Law of the Sea! I
call all Asians to cooperate with us and to mutually respect our peaceful
co-existence,” Gerstl said.
