May 31 (People's Daily Online) The
activity of “A series of talks by ASEAN ambassadors to China” was launched at
Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) on May 29. The event was jointly
sponsored and organized by China-ASEAN Center and BFSU.

Mr. Imron Cotan, Indonesian Ambassador to China was the first speaker for the
series of talks by ASEAN ambassadors to China.
Ambassador
Imron Cotan said in his speech that China is a strategic and reliable partner
of Indonesia. It is in the best interest of Indonesia and ASEAN countries to
see China continue to develop, grow and excel into the future. ASEAN countries
including Indonesia are also a market for China to reckon with, because as a
whole ASEAN countries have more or less 600 million people, a huge market for
China to explore. He welcomes Chinese businessmen to sell their products there.
He also
underlined that "We need to combine all our efforts not only to overcome
challenges but also to continue to progress into the future, to contribute to
the stability, prosperity and peace in this region as well as in the
world".
In her
opening remarks, Prof. Zhong Meisun, vice President of BFSU introduced that
BFSU is the oldest university in China on foreign language teaching, and has
the largest variety of language education in China. Over the past seven
decades, it has expanded to teach 54 foreign languages; among them are seven
official languages of the ASEAN countries, including Indonesian. The increase
in the number of language programs has been supported by a growth of country
and area studies. The Indonesian Center was opened in late March, 2012. More
than 400 graduates of BFSU have become China's ambassadors to other countries.
Ma
Mingqiang, Secretary-General of China-ASEAN Center (ACC) made a brief
introduction of the Center and the talk series. ACC is an inter-governmental
organization, a one-stop information and activities center to promote
China-ASEAN cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture and tourism.
The ACC talk series is one of the activities organized by the center to enhance
the mutual understanding between the people and among peoples of China and
ASEAN member states.
