Asean countries need to find ways to balance
energy accessibility, energy price restructuring, and environmental issue, and
create power connectivity in the region, says Pailin Chuchottaworn, the
president and chief executive officer of PTT.
"East
Asia is still facing energy accessibility problem, expensive energy prices, and
environmental disputes. All three pillars always do not have yet a
balance," said the co-chair of the World Economic Forum on East Asia on
the sideline of "New Energy Architecture for East Asia" brainstorming
session.
"If
the energy prices are low, people are normally prone to ignore energy saving
and cautious consumption, resulting in environmental problem. This is the
weakness of East Asia and this will be an obstacle if we want to grow
sustainably," he said.
About
100 representatives in the energy sector including government officials and
private companies, were engaged in the brainstorming session yesterday.
Preliminary
conclusion about how to balance the three major energy problems will be
reported after the two-day WEF finishes on Friday. Mr Pailin said high
investment costs, lack of human resources and low technology were also
mentioned as the main obstacles in the energy sector.
As the
implementation of Asean Economic Community getting close, he said underlined
energy industry cooperation was among the top issue being discussed. Thailand,
for instance, has a collaboration between Laos in electricity supply, while the
agreements were made with Malaysia and Myanmar on the natural gas supply.
Expansion such cooperation with other Asean countries is needed, he said.
Energy
Minister Arak Chonlatanon said the ministry at the forum will discuss more
cooperation in natural gas investment with Myanmar counterpart, adding clean
coal, LNG and algae fuel will be main topics of talks with Australia.
