MANILA
— A technical working group (TWG) has
agreed to include in its recommendation the full utilization of all media
channels, including new social media such as Facebook and Twitter to
communicate the key messages of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) towards building stronger One ASEAN Community by 2015.
Presidential
Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Sonny Coloma, in a press
conference on Friday following a three-day ASEAN Ministers of Responsible for
Information (AMRI) TWG meeting at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in
Makati City, said: ”The communication plans formulated by the TWG meeting shall
optimally use resources available and effective in their respective countries.”
”The
strategies shall include the full utilization of traditional and new media,
exploring new collaborative networks, and strengthen linkages with government
ministers and civil society organizations in helping build the One ASEAN
Community,” Coloma said.
Coloma
said the reports of the TWG meeting would be submitted to AMRI for its
consideration, hoping it would be ratified in the AMRI Conference in Myanmar
next year.
The
PCOO official said all the representatives of the 10-member ASEAN had expressed
firm commitment to provide effective communication support in the
implementation of the goals and purposes of the three ASEAN Community Pillars.
The
three pillars focus on political-security, economic and socio-cultural.
”We
want to build a rules-based ASEAN community that is peaceful, stable, security,
resilient, dynamic and outward-looking,” Coloma said.
Coloma
said the ASEAN also sought for the establishment of ASEAN economy as a single
market and production base and as a caring and sharing community that promotes
human development, social justice, sustainable development of natural
resources, protection of the environment and preservation of its own cultural
heritage.
Aside
from full utilization of traditional and new media networks, the TWG also
agreed to work out stronger linkages with other government ministers like the
ministers of education on the possibility of mainstreaming the concept of One
ASEAN Community in the school curriculum; tourism and stakeholders from the
private sectors.
The TWG
meeting was convened in the Philippines following the decision of the AMRI at
its 11th Conference in Kuala Lumpur last March to take a more active role in
building ASEAN Community.
Kamal
Bin Matmat, senior officer of ASEAN Secretariat, thanked the Philippines for
hosting the TWG meeting.
”I hope
that with this national communication plan, more support from the private
sectors will come in and more people of our respective country will benefit
from One ASEAN Community,” Kamal said.
Aside
from the Philippines, other ASEAN members include: Malaysia, Thailand,
Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Singapore, Brunei and Cambodia. (PNA)
