The Volkswagen group is looking at establishing an additional production
hub for the Amarok bakkie, but it will not be in Africa, says Volkswagen
Commercial Vehicles communications head Andreas Meurer.
“We have capacity for 100 000
Amaroks in South America, and 40 000 in Germany. Demand will be 80 000 this
year, and we are okay with that.”
However, Meurer adds that
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles “has to be in Asia. Our third base would be in
the Asean region. We are looking at that.”
Asean refers to the South East
Asian nations.
German production of the Amarok
started in the 2012 European summer.
January to August global
deliveries of the Amarok, Volkswagen’s first offering in the one-ton bakkie
market, were up 25.3% compared with the same period in 2011. The vehicle has a
29.2% market share in the one-ton market in Germany.
South Africa currently produces
and exports Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Isuzu bakkies.
