Vietnam - Tourism ambassador denies fake degree accusations

Vietnam’s newly-selected tourism ambassador, actress Ly Nha Ky, has continued denying that she faked her university degree.

Ly Nha Ky’s announcement that she had graduated from Germany’s Real University has met widespread disbelief from the Vietnamese public, with many people pointing out that there is no such academic institution in Germany.

“This is all just a misunderstanding, it’s because students who went to the university don’t use its official name. I will clarify this on October 7,” Ky said.

She said the reason for her self-nomination to become the country’s tourism ambassador was due to a desire to promote Vietnam’s beauty, not herself.

Despite her selection being opposed by leaders from various agencies and travel firms she became the country’s official tourism ambassador in September 2011, following confirmation by the Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. “The thing that will persuade the public is real action during my one-year term starting from September 2011. I think everything starts with a challenge,” the actress noted.

“The concept of beauty among Vietnamese women differs at points in time. Young girls now often show their strength, flexibility and modernity, but still maintain their traditional and charming features. I am very proud to be a Vietnamese woman,” Ky said in response to public criticism that she was too ‘Western’ in looks and style.

Ky also courted public opprobrium for a skimpy dress she wore while playing a small role in the play General Vo Nguyen Giap and the Symphony of Dien Bien which was broadcast live on Vietnam Television this May. However, she said, she had apologised for the incident, citing that the costume designer had not realised how revealing her outfit would be.

“I am very confident about playing the role of tourism ambassador, and will try my best to garner support from people,” she said.

She will initially focus on promoting the campaign to call for votes for Ha Long Bay’s recognition as one of the seven new wonders of the world.

Actress Ly Nha Ky was appointed as Vietnam tourism ambassador by the Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. With this new role, the 29-year old actress will participate in various public events, press conferences and cultural exchange activities.

Born in the coastal city of Vung Tau, Ky moved to Germany to study when she was 16. At 24, Ky returned to Vietnam and began her acting career. She is known for several TV series and movies.

“Ly Nha Ky has not made any notable contribution to popular art, culture or tourism,” Ta Thi Cam Vinh, head of the outbound department of Ben Thanh Tourist was cited by Tuoi Tre as saying.

Vu Huy Ngoc, head of Vacation Travel Company, said he also wondered how Ly Nha Ky could persuade foreign tourists to visit Vietnam when she herself was unpopular among travel agencies.

At the Nha Trang Sea Festival in June, Ky was also criticised for exhibiting 500 photos of herself in swimsuits and revealing clothes for a charity event.
