Vietnam - VN halts state-funded overseas scholarship program

Candidates who passed the entrance exam for the Overseas Scholarship Program 322 in the academic year of 2010-2011 will no longer be eligible to attend overseas training courses, according to a recent announcement by the Ministry of Training and Education (MTE).

The snap decision has confused the selected candidates. The ministry had never previously stopped a scholarship program when it had already publicly announced the results.

It was not clear why the ministry did so. Instead, it will offer the selected candidates two alternatives:

1.     The selected candidates should take the initiative of searching for detailed information about other scholarship programs granted to Vietnam by foreign countries in the 2012-2013 academic year on the MTE website, or the website of the Training Department with Foreign Countries. The candidates should contact the department to get priority on the list of selected candidates for these scholarships.

2.     Ph.D candidates who are currently university or college lecturers, candidates who want to apply for overseas Ph.D scholarships to teach at universities and colleges, and M.A candidates who are current university or college lecturers plus have good academic results will be subject to the Vietnam Overseas Scholarship Program 911, funded by the State, that provides overseas training courses for university lecturers.

All candidates who wish to choose one of the two aforementioned options are required to submit their applications to the Training Department with Foreign Countries before June 1.
